Abstract

Behavior disordered and emotionally disturbed students entering a unique school environment as a part of a therapeutic residential treatment center are faced with many difficult adjustments. These students traditionally have more problems coping with stressful situations than ''normal" students. Research on adjustment and student handbooks indicates that an appropriate orientation to a new program which includes a clear definition of goals and expectations has a positive effect on emotional and psychological adjustment of new students.

The Educational Supervisor of the F.D. Roosevelt School recognized the need for a student handbook to orient new students and to assist in their adjustment to the program. Therefore, the development of a student handbook was authorized. The completed handbook has been reviewed and approved by the faculty and the Educational supervisor of the F.D. Roosevelt school. The handbook has been well received.
