Abstract

One hundred and thirty-four seventh grade students served as subjects to determine if a correlation existed between reading achievement and attitude toward reading. Of these students, fifty were randomly selected for data presentation. The Intermediate Reading Attitude Index and Georgia Criterion Reference Test were used to obtain data.

The Georgia Criterion Reference Tests were designed to provide teachers with diagnostic information on each student's test performance. The GCRT is comprised of math and reading tests. Only the reading portion of the GCRT was used by this researcher. Values were assigned to the questions on the Intermediate Reading Attitude Index for correlation purposes. The Pearson Product-Moment Correlation was used to compute the correlation coefficients. It was determined that there was no significant relationship between reading achievement and attitude toward reading.
