Do you REALLY know your students? - how often do we have preconceived notions about students based on a few emails or interactions with them? I know I do. I have a hard time not assuming that a student is lazy or just that they don't care when they repeatedly ignore my emails or refuse to meet with me. Only to realize that their house just burnt down, they are struggling so much with their mental health that one more email seems unbearable to answer, or they just experienced something very traumatic. How much better can we serve our students when we find the root cause of their behavior? In this session I would love to share some of the things I've learned while working with our University Support Population - (Formerly probation and exclusion students).
