Abstract

A lesson to help students overcome misconceptions about fire and its role in ecological succession is described. The lesson relies on 5E—Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate. Each phase challenges the idea of an inevitable climax successional stage, describes fire as an integral part of the natural ecosystem, and reinforces the effects of ecological disturbances.
