Adult Students as Partners in Formal Study

Iris M. Saltiel

Abstract

Part of a special issue on collaborative learning partnerships in adult education. The dynamics that occur between learning partners who are in pursuit of a formal education credential are described. Learning partnerships can occur unintentionally or between individuals who already have a relationship. The partnership becomes solid over time, and the partners become a like a team. These learning partners often have complementary skills and needs. Immersion in partnership relationships sometimes helps learners become more self-aware. Moreover, learners become more accomplished and secure in the knowledge that they will succeed. Most partnerships end when degrees are earned, but partners take away a strong sense of camaraderie from the experience.
