Part of a special issue on collaborative learning partnerships in adult education. The key elements of collaborative academic partnerships are discussed. Deep trust and respect for each member is implicit in every successful collaborative partnership. Moreover, successful collaborative partners have to select each other. The power of ideas and mutual striving toward common goals are the driving forces behind successful collaborative partnerships. Successful collaborative partners are equal but different, having complementary personality traits and qualities. Furthermore, partnerships are based on synergy between the partners. The implications of these partnership characteristics for practice are discussed.
